Geography
Požarevac is an important administrative, economic and cultural center of Serbia , located about eighty kilometers southeast of Belgrade . It is located between three rivers: the Danube , Velika Morava and Mlava and under the Čačalica hill . The territory of today’s municipality covers an area of 491 km², of which as much as 39,240 hectares (or about 80% of the total territory) is arable land. That land also represents one of the most valuable assets of this region, the fertile Stiška plain and the Pomeranian, Danube and Mlav coasts. It consists of 2 urban settlements (the city of Požarevac and the large energy center Kostolac ) and 24 rural settlements, in which about 90,000 inhabitants live.
Požarevac is both an economic and cultural, as well as an administrative center and seat of the Braničevo District, of great importance for the entire region. In addition to Požarevac, the Braničevski district also includes the municipalities of Veliko Gradište , Golubac , Žabari , Žagubica , Kučevo , Malo Crniće and Petrovac .
Good traffic connections and great natural resources of the district made Požarevac a highly developed industrial center of the former Yugoslavia, but the war and the difficult economic situation in the last decade of the 20th century caused the collapse of a significant part of industrial plants. That is why the economy of the settlement is in a worse position and the employment of the population is lower than during the post-war development. The most famous company is the food factory “Concern zdrave hrane Bambi”, the only remaining large company. Today, there are more and more small businesses that represent the backbone of the region’s development.
Pozarevac railway station is located here .
